On Sunday, President Bidya Devi Bhandari issued the Citizenship (First Amendment) Ordinance.
According to a source, the Citizenship Ordinance provides for ‘citizenship by descent’ for offspring of Nepali nationals who obtained citizenship by birthright. It also takes into account the demands of Madesh-centric parties.
Previously, children of Nepalese nationals who received citizenship by birth did not receive citizenship by descent.
To address the demand of Madhesh-centric parties, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli recommended that the President issue the Citizenship Ordinance through a Cabinet decision. For the past two years, the parliament has been debating a Citizenship Bill.
The ordinance implementing the citizenship-related law went into effect following the dissolution of the parliament on Saturday.
