The Kirant-Rai Cultural Artist Association has launched an online global Binayo competition.
Binayo is a type of bamboo-based traditional Kiranti musical instrument. Because of the global coronavirus pandemic, the Association has effectively launched a global competition to play the traditional musical instrument.
Padam Thulung, the association’s secretary, said the online competition was held to conserve and promote vanishing bands, as well as to progressively transfer band playing talents to the younger generation.
“The global competition began by digitally tweaking Binayo to account for the COVID-19 pandemic,” he explained, adding that “the competition, which is being hosted on the occasion of its 13th anniversary, would be held in two rounds.” Those interested in competing in the first round, according to Thulung, must email their Binayo playing video to the host by June 24.
The selected video from the first round will then be uploaded on the Association’s YouTube channel. Those that were chosen in the first round should also upload a video of themselves playing with Binayo in the second round. The final evaluation will be based on the second round performance, according to the Association.
The first, second, and third prizes each come with a cash prize of Rs 16,000, Rs 10,000, and Rs 7,000, as well as certificates.
