July 9, Kathmandu. Final approval of the merger between Nabil and Bangladesh Bank has been withheld. The NRB withheld the final approval after a dispute erupted over negligence in staff adjustment.

“There has been a dispute between the employees of the two banks over the status of employees between the two banks,” said a NRB source.

Employees of Nabil Bank are dissatisfied saying that they are trying to bring junior employees of Nepal Bangladesh Bank to higher status in the merger. Nabil Bank employees have alleged that the management of Nabil Bank secretly tried to replace the junior staff of Bangladesh Bank.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank employees have objected to the merger of employees who have been working in the same field for a long time. They have warned that it would not be acceptable if the employees were not posted in the same capacity after the merger.

As per the informal agreement of the Board of Directors of the two banks, it was initially agreed to adjust the current post of Nabil Bank to three posts of the same staff of Bangladesh Bank. However, after the employees of Bangladesh Bank had intensified their dissatisfaction some time ago, the manager of Nabil had informally agreed that there would be no change in the appointment of the employees.
Immediately, the employees of Nabil Bank became dissatisfied with their bank management association. The dispute between them had reached the Banking and Financial Sector Regulation Department of NRB.

After the issue was not resolved there as well, Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari called both the parties on Wednesday and discussed the issue, said a NRB source.

“The central bank wants the bank merger to be simple,” an official said.

Employees of both the agitating banks have urged the central bank not to proceed with the final approval of the merger until the issue is properly addressed, the source said.
