A dozen gift shops have been destroyed by fire in Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha.
The fire that broke out at around 1.30 am last night destroyed 12 gift shops targeting tourists, said Pintu Bania, manager of Lumbini Souvenir Shop.
The fire at the shops including garlands, idols, Dhaka, and handicrafts has caused an estimated loss of Rs 7 million, said Bania.
He said that the fire was started in the shops by the fire brigade. He said that the fire brigade arrived only an hour after the call and caused great damage.
There are over a hundred gift shops. According to the District Police Office, Rupendehi, the fire was brought under control by the fire brigade, police, and locals.
