The United States has stated that it is Nepal’s sovereign option to ratify the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
“Whether Nepali leaders ratify MCC is a decision for Nepal to make, as a sovereign democratic nation, and Nepal’s decision alone,” the US Embassy in Kathmandu said in a statement on Saturday.
“This $500 million award from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is a gift from the American people and a partnership between our countries that will bring jobs and infrastructure to Nepal and enhance the lives of Nepalis.” The Nepali government and people requested this project, which is “intended to transparently reduce poverty and improve Nepal’s economy,” according to the statement.
“Nepal and the United States have had diplomatic relations for 75 years this year. Nepal has changed dramatically over the last 75 years. We’ve been there for Nepal during these transitions, providing development assistance, disaster response and preparedness help, health and education programs, and more.”
The US announcement comes a day after China accused the US of using “coercive diplomacy” in Nepal over the MCC.
