The Ministry of Finance has stated that the government is committed to the protection of the Chure region.
Following widespread criticism of the government’s announcement in the budget to reduce the trade deficit by extracting and exporting river products from the Chure region.
The Finance Ministry clarified its policy of excavating mines in suitable areas other than the Chure region and Shivalik areas and river systems as identified by the Department of Mines and Geology and as per the Environmental Impact Assessment report in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the government is committed to preventing the exploitation of river products from the Chure area as well as negative environmental consequences.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the government is committed to developing procedures, guidelines, criteria, and legal arrangements based on the suggestions received after consulting with relevant government bodies, environmentalists, subject matter experts, and stakeholders, in order to avoid negative consequences for the environment and livelihood.
