National Earthquake Safety Day in Nepal: Today is the 24th Earthquake Safety Day, with the theme ‘Earthquake awareness: Safe structure.’

This year, due to the threat of coronavirus, virtual programs will be used to raise public awareness about earthquake safety.

Every year on Magh 2, the Day is observed to commemorate the earthquake that occurred on Magh 2 in 1990BS. Padam Kumar Mainali, Director General of Urban Development and Building Construction informed that Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Home Minister Balkrishna Khand, and Minister for Urban Development Ram Kumari Jhankri will address the virtual program.

The Department has encouraged people to participate in the program through the Zoom App.

Anyone interested in attending the program can obtain the Zoom ID and passcode from the Home Ministry’s website.

The Gorkha earthquake in 2015 is the most recent reminder of Nepal’s devastation.

It had killed nearly 9,000 people and damaged nearly a million private homes.
