The next full moon will rise early in the afternoon on August 22 2021 in the UK, next full moon UK, Nepal

So the orb will be almost the same size on Saturday and Sunday nights.

The full moon in August is approaching, and British stargazers will be hoping for a clear night to observe the orb.

For millennia, the full moon has been wrapped in folklore and intrigue, inspiring everything from religious festivals to horror flicks and bizarre end-of-the-world conspiracy theories.

It’s also led to moon names permeating mainstream culture in recent years, with this month’s full moon being called the “worm moon” — here’s everything you need to know.

Next Full moon 2021

When is the next full Moon in the UK

The next full Moon will occur on August 22, 2021, in the UK. The ‘Buck Moon’ will be visible for about three nights.

A Next full moon occurs once every 29.5 days or once every lunar cycle.

Below are details for each Upcoming Next full Moon in 2021

  • 22 August: Sturgeon Moon
  • 21 September: Harvest Moon
  • 20 October: Hunter’s Moon
  • 19 November: Beaver Moon (micro full Moon)
  • 19 December: Cold Moon

Why does the Moon change shape?

We can only see the Moon because it reflects sunlight. The quantity of light it can reflect back to us changes as it orbits the Earth. There is a new moon when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and no light can be reflected back at us.

A Next Full Moon occurs when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, and the Moon’s face is fully lit by the Sun. Only areas of the Moon can reflect light back to Earth during the times in between.

If the Moon orbited Earth in the same plane as the Earth circled the Sun, every new Moon would block out light from the Sun.

However, because the Moon revolves at a 5-degree angle to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, this does not happen. The Moon occasionally passes through Earth’s plane of orbit, bringing the three bodies – Earth, Moon, and Sun – into alignment.

This is referred to as a syzygy. A solar eclipse occurs when a syzygy occurs during a new Moon, while a lunar eclipse occurs when a syzygy occurs during a full Moon.

When is the August 2021 full moon

According to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the next full moon occurs on Sunday, August 22nd, and peaks at 1.01 pm in the UK, which means it will appear the same size on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Although we usually think of a full moon every month, the lunar cycle lasts a little over 29.5 days, which means there can be multiple full moons (this is referred to as a “blue moon”).

The more traditional definition of a blue moon, which applies to August’s, is the third full moon of an astrological season with four full moons.

For the next few years, there will only be one Next full moon per calendar month, with the next one happening on August 31, 2023.

What is a full Moon?

When the Moon appears as a complete circle in the sky, it is called a full Moon. Because the Sun’s rays illuminate the entire side of the Moon facing the Earth, we view it as a full globe.

Because the Moon does not create visible light of its own, we can only view the areas of it that are illuminated by other objects.

A little amount of light comes from faraway stars as well as the Earth’s reflection of light (known as ‘Earthshine’). The Sun, on the other hand, is the Moon’s primary source of light.

From the new Moon through the full Moon, the Moon takes on distinct shapes in the sky based on its ‘phase,’ which includes ‘waxing’ (expanding) and ‘waning’ (shrinking) moons. The relative locations of the Sun, Earth, and Moon determine these phases.

When the Moon is in its orbit between the Earth and the Sun, the rear side of the Moon is illuminated while the side facing the Earth is dark. This is referred to as a new Moon.

The near side of the Moon will be entirely lit up if the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun: a full Moon.
