Peru beat Paraguay in a penalty shootout to reach the semifinals

Former runners-up Peru have reached the semifinals of the 47th edition of the Copa America in Brazil.

Peru reached the semifinals by defeating Paraguay 4-3 in a penalty shootout in the first quarterfinal match on Saturday morning.

The match ended in a 3-3 draw in the scheduled 90 minutes at the Pedro Ludovico Stadium, with the result drawn from a penalty shootout.

Both teams were reduced to 10 players after receiving one red card each in the allotted time.

For Peru, Jialuka Lapadula scored in the 15th and 40th minutes. Yoshimar Yotun scored in the 80th minute.

 For Paraguay, Gustavo Gomez scored in the 11th minute, Junior Alonso in the 54th minute and Gabriel Avalos in the 90th minute. 

After goalkeeper Gustavo received a red card in the injury time of the first half, Paraguay played with 10 players throughout the second half.

Peru’s Andre Carila was sent off in the 85th minute for a double yellow card. After an exciting draw in the scheduled time, the game ended in a penalty shootout.

Gianluca Lapadula, Yoshimar Yotun, Renata Tapia and Miguel Trouca scored for Peru. Santiago Omerno and Cristian Chueva failed to score.

Only Angel Romero, Jr. Alonso and Robert Paris scored for Paraguay. Hector Martinez, Samu and Alberto Espinola failed to score.
