Seaman Dhan Khadka, A Nepali national has been working as a Navy sailor for the Australian Department of Defence.

Seaman Dhan Khadka of Chitwan is serving aboard HMAS Adelaide (a helicopter dock ship) as part of Operation Tonga Assist 2022.

“I came here on a study visa and studied automotive mechanics technology for two years,” Khadka explained. “However, I wanted to pursue a path where I could be surrounded by people, so I began working in the hospitality industry in Melbourne, in hotels and bars.”

Khadka was up for a challenge and jumped at the opportunity to pursue a more rewarding career.

His father was an infantry soldier in the Indian Army for 33 years, so following in his father’s footsteps and joining the military was a natural progression. Seaman Dhan Khadka

“When I was looking for a job on the Defence recruiting website, I read about being a support operations sailor and thought it was the best fit for my skill set,” he explained.

“I enjoy my work in the wardroom.” It allows me to spend a lot of time with a variety of people, which I enjoy.”

Khadka’s first sea assignment, and when he was asked if he wanted to go ashore on Pangaimotu Island to help with the clean-up, he jumped at the chance.

“It was a refreshing and re-energizing feeling to help the local community by cleaning up the island,” Khadka said.

“I’ll remember helping out for the rest of my life.” It was meaningful work, and I’m proud that my first trip away was able to assist Tongans. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity.”

The Australian Defence Force is participating in Operation Tonga Assist 2022 as part of the Australian Government’s response to the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano.
