State policy initiatives are needed to solve the problem of single women

July 10, Kathmandu. Single women of Budhanilkantha Municipality of Kathmandu have said that the state should take policy initiative to solve their problems.

In a program organized by the Human Rights Single Women’s Group for Women on the occasion of International Single Women’s Day, she complained that the state has not been able to do anything other than providing allowances.

Speaking on the occasion, Kavita Pandey, chairperson of the Single Women’s Group, said that a single woman has to carry the citizenship of her deceased husband to get the citizenship of her child. “The state’s recognition of a dead father rather than a living mother shows the complexity of the socio-economic, cultural and mental problems faced by single women,” she said.

Sumira Shrestha, program coordinator of the single women’s group, informed that single women’s district committees have been formed in 60 districts. She said that single women across the country are facing different problems.

Speaking on the occasion, Anita Lama, Deputy Mayor of Budhanilkantha Municipality, said that it was necessary to change the patriarchal thinking rather than the policy to solve the invisible problems of women. She expressed her commitment to operate the single women’s fund established by the municipality for the economic empowerment of single women in a more effective manner.

In the program, Budhanilkantha Municipality Ward no. Ward chairperson of ward 7 Basnarayan Maharjan said that the women belonging to the single women’s group have now reached the leadership level of the ward. He said that his ward would work hard to make single women self-reliant in the coming days.

Human Rights for Women Single Women’s Group has been raising the rights of single women across the country since 2052 BS as a social, economic and political issue. According to the group, it has been carrying out skill-based activities in coordination with the local government for economic empowerment.
