According to NewsHour spokeswoman Nick Massella, Shields died of renal failure at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Kidney failure was the cause of death for Mark Shields.

Before retiring in 2020, Shields offered insightful commentary on the administrations of six US presidents, as well as the Persian Gulf War, the Iran-Contra scandal, and 9/11. His tenure lasted 33 years.

In a tweet announcing Shields’ death, Judy Woodruff, the host and managing editor of NewsHour, said he was known for both his sense of humour and his encyclopaedic knowledge of American politics.

Mark Shields, a well-known Democratic political journalist, columnist, and PBS pundit who died early Saturday morning at the age of 85, was a well-known Democratic political journalist, columnist, and PBS pundit.

One of Shields’ longtime colleagues, Judy Woodruff, a PBS NewsHour anchor and editor, announced his death on Twitter. According to Woodruff, Shields died with his wife, Anne Hudson Shields, by his side. She thanked him for his “decades” of dedication to PBS and “encyclopaedic grasp of American politics,” as well as his “encyclopaedic understanding of American politics.”

“I am heartbroken to report this,” Woodruff stated in a tweet. “Mark Shields, the NewsHour’s beloved long-time Friday night commentator who surprised us for decades with his encyclopaedic knowledge of American politics, his sense of humour, and, most significantly, his big heart, has died at the age of 85, surrounded by his wife Anne.”

Mark Stephen Shields was born on May 25, 1937. In the United States, he worked as a political journalist, advisor, and pundit. Shields was born and reared in Weymouth, Massachusetts, in an Irish Catholic family.

Education of Mark Shields

He was a crucial player in a number of Democratic candidates’ electoral campaigns. He was the son of a schoolteacher named Mary (Fallon) and a local politician and paper merchant named William Shields. In 1959, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.

In 1966, Shields married Anne Hudson, a lawyer and former civil service employee of the United States Department of the Interior. They have two grandkids and Amy is their daughter.

In the early 1960s, Mark Shields enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Florida. He was a lance corporal until being discharged in 1962.

Shields relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1965 to serve as an assistant to Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire. Shields joined Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1968.

He was also Sargent Shriver’s political director when he campaigned for Vice President of the United States on the Democratic ticket in 1972, and he later worked for Edmund Muskie and Morris Udall’s presidential campaigns.

Shields began his career as an editorial writer for The Washington Post in 1979. He taught American politics and the press at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy.

He was also a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Shields wrote On the Campaign Trail, a book about the 1984 presidential campaign.

Shields was a frequent political commentator on PBS NewsHour from 1988 until 2020. Anchorwoman Judy Woodruff announced on the December 14, 2020, episode of the NewsHour that Shields will be leaving the show as a regular commentator after the December 18 edition.
