It is saddened to announce that Hillsborough County’s first Black social worker and pastor, Jimmie B. Keel sadly passed away at the age of 83. Being a social worker, he also rose to become an assistant county administrator who took his last breath on Saturday, April 16, 2022. According to the sources, the upsetting news of Keel’s passing was confirmed during the Sunday’s Easter Service at Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church in Clearwater, where Keel had been a pastor.

Since the news of his sudden demise went viral on social media, his loved and close ones pay tributes and expressed their deep condolence to him. Well, the cause of his death was not confirmed yet but it will be announced officially after the autopsy report. Jimmie Keel began his career in 1965 after the Civil Rights Act was passed. Since then, he was a part of the social works and other activities in the communities. He earned huge respect and love from his loved ones. The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library took Facebook and wrote,” To me a library in any community opens up avenues to learning knowledge really is power”.

Jimmie B Keel will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on. Mr. Keel has been widely recognized for his leadership, expertise and dedication to the citizens of Hillsborough County. Among his many accomplishments, in 1991 he was named Assistant County Administrator, and his responsibilities included overseeing Library Services”.

Many posts in remembrance of Jimmie Keel have been circulating on social media. Keel retired in 2001 after 35 years of his service in the Government sector. That same year, he opened Jimmie B. Reel Regional Library at 2902 W Bearss Ave. Along with this, he also noted the significance of the county choosing to name one of its libraries after a Black person. Due to the separation, he was allowed to use libraries when Keel was in his growing age in Jackson County in rural Florida – which was the point of deep pain and frustration for the avid reader.

Jimmie Keel graduated summa cum laude from Bethune-Cookman University, Florida’s private historically black university, and served in the Army for three years before moving to Tampa. Well, the social worker began his career in the government sector in 1965 after a year when the Civil Rights Act passed. During his career, he became an assistant county administrator in 1991.

Gwen Myers, the Hillsborough County Commissioner said,” Mr. Keel was an advocate for the employees. He was just a great all-around leader in county government”. Myers described Keela “a gentle giant”. Jimmie Keel will be always remembred by his family and friends.
