A Singapore court has executed a mentally disabled man on Wednesday. The executed man is identified as Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, he was of Indo-Malaysian origin.
Nagaenthran Dharmalingam ( 34 ), was convicted and was on death row for over a decade now, he was arrested by the authorities for trafficking 43 grams of heroin into Singapore.

Nagaenthran’s family confirmed his execution on Wednesday while speaking to the media. Nagaenthran’s sister spoke to the media and criticized the actions of Singapore. She further continued and said that Malaysia is far better at protecting human rights while Singapore is at zero in human rights.

Maya Foa, the director of the non-governmental organization reprieve also condemned this act of the Singaporian justice system. She stated, “Hanging an intellectually disabled, mentally unwell man because he was coerced into carrying less than three tablespoons of diamorphine is unjustifiable and a flagrant violation of international laws that Singapore has chosen to sign up to.”

According to the reports Nagaenthran had an IQ of 69 and was intellectually disabled and death penalty for a mentally disabled person is inhuman and is also prohibited under international human rights law.

Nagaenthran’s mother filed a motion on Monday. In her motion, she argued against the rule passed by the Singapore court, she called the ruling unconstitutional. She argued against the motion and stated it was unlawful to hang a mentally disabled person.

Singapore’s court dismissed the motion and called it silly.

Nagaenthran’s family stated that his body will be brought back to his hometown in Perak in Northern Malaysia. His family has done all the preparations for his funeral.

According to the reports, Nagaenthran’s execution was planned and decided earlier but due to COVID-19, his execution was halted.

According to Singapore’s constitution, anyone found with drugs over 15grams has to face the death penalty, but the judges have a right to reduce this punishment to life imprisonment.

Many public figures condemned this act of executing Nageanthran. Since the beginning of this case, many global organizations and people were protesting against this judgment of executing Nageanthran. Many of them filed against the motion but all of them were rejected and Nagaenthran was executed On Wednesday.
